Should I assess an EV charger and heat pump together?

Yes, share both planned loads, along with electric water heating or other near-term changes, before approving panel work. A combined review gives the electrician a clearer basis for the proposed capacity and helps define which work belongs in the same project.

  • Provide equipment data as soon as your HVAC and charging choices are known.
  • Ask whether a staged project would change the proposed design or utility review.

Does moving my electrical panel also move the meter?

Interior distribution equipment and utility metering have different responsibilities, so moving a panel does not automatically move the meter. A remodel may affect both; the estimate should identify what is moving and which utility approval or site work is required.

  • Share the proposed location and nearby addition, siding, or access work.
  • Confirm meter location with the serving utility and inspection authority before ordering equipment.

Does a Seattle panel upgrade need a City of Seattle permit or an L&I permit?

Seattle is the electrical inspection authority for properties within the city limits; Seattle City Light handles utility service steps separately. A Seattle mailing address alone does not establish the permit route, so verify the actual municipality and jobsite.

  • Check the property jurisdiction before applying for a permit.
  • Coordinate City Light service approval separately when utility equipment or capacity changes.

If Seattle City Light supplies my power, does Seattle issue my electrical permit?

Seattle City Light serves some properties outside Seattle, so the utility account alone does not determine who issues the electrical permit. Check the property’s municipality or state jurisdiction and the exact jobsite address.

  • Identify the utility from the electric bill.
  • Confirm the inspection authority for the property, not just the city in the mailing address.

Does replacing an electrical panel in Washington require a permit and inspection?

Panel replacement and service upgrades generally need an electrical permit and inspection in Washington. The issuing authority depends on the jobsite, and any narrow exception should be confirmed for the exact scope before work begins.

  • Ask who obtains the permit and schedules the final inspection.
  • Keep the permit and inspection result with the project closeout records.

Could a panel project need a building or mechanical permit too?

Yes, an electrical permit does not answer whether related wall, structural, or HVAC work needs a separate permit. The applicable building department and project scope determine those requirements, so list each workstream before scheduling.

  • Identify whether the panel is moving or an addition changes the building.
  • Have the electrical and HVAC contractors assign permit responsibilities in writing.

Can my electrician move or disconnect a PSE meter?

PSE prohibits unauthorized disconnecting, reconnecting, moving, or pulling of its meter. Contact PSE Construction Services when utility-owned meter or service equipment is affected, and include that coordination in the project scope.

  • Do not remove, open, or move the meter yourself.
  • Confirm which party requests the utility work and what site readiness it requires.

Does Tacoma Power handle both the electrical permit and utility work?

Tacoma Power serves as the utility and electrical inspection authority for properties in its service area. Its territory crosses city boundaries, so verify the exact address and electric account before assuming the Tacoma process applies.

  • Ask who schedules Tacoma Power disconnect and reconnect.
  • Confirm the relevant engineering review and permit path for the property.
