What information does the electrician need?
List the existing service rating if known and all planned changes: EV charging, heat pump, auxiliary heat, electric water heating, cooking, hot tub, workshop or addition. Equipment nameplates and model numbers are more useful than a broad appliance category.
- Include a second project you expect soon so the assessment does not solve one purchase while ignoring the next.
Why do panel space and capacity differ?
A panel can have room for a breaker while the service needs a load review. Conversely, a crowded panel does not by itself prove that the home needs a larger utility service.
- An electrician may investigate distribution changes, a subpanel or an approved load-management approach.
- The design must address both the physical equipment and the calculated load.
Can load management change the answer?
It can be an option to investigate, especially where simultaneous EV and household demand matters. Ask what equipment controls the load, which circuits it monitors, what happens if communication fails and whether the proposed design is accepted by the AHJ and utility where applicable.
- A utility demand-response program is not automatically a substitute for a code-compliant electrical design.
What should the assessment produce?
Ask for the planned loads, calculation basis and recommended scope in writing. Washington plan-review exemptions are conditional and require adequate capacity evidence in the situations they cover; they do not authorize a homeowner to skip capacity review.
- Utility engineering can still be necessary even when electrical plan review is not.
What should happen when your equipment list changes?
Treat a changed appliance or additional planned load as a reason to check the design assumptions. Ask who updates the assessment and whether that affects the equipment, utility application or quoted scope.
- Keep the final load list with the project documents, especially if the panel project happens before the charger or HVAC installation.
- A calculation supporting one set of equipment should not be presented as indefinite approval for every future addition.
