Who schedules the utility disconnect and reconnect for panel work?

The utility controls its service connection work, while the contractor coordinates the installation and applicable inspection. Put the responsible parties, readiness requirements, and cutover plan in writing; a contractor’s schedule does not reserve a utility crew.

  • Ask who requests the utility work and confirms inspection clearance.
  • Plan a contingency if corrections or utility readiness delay reconnection.

How long will my power be off during a panel upgrade?

Panel work has no fixed statewide outage duration; inspection, utility process, and site readiness shape when power can return. Get the cutover plan from the contractor and utility, including what could delay restoration.

  • Discuss refrigeration, medical devices, internet, work, and security before scheduling.
  • Confirm the contingency if inspection corrections or utility work extend the outage.

Are utility charges included in my panel upgrade estimate?

Utility charges are included only when the written estimate names them. Utility engineering, connection charges, trenching, right-of-way work, and restoration may be separate from the contractor’s electrical price, so identify each responsibility and cost basis.

  • Request separate utility and contractor line items.
  • Identify who obtains any easement, street-use permit, and restoration approval.

Does a panel replacement estimate include drywall or wall repair?

Wall repair, paint, siding, and other finish work are included only when the estimate names them. Ask whether the equipment will move or change dimensions and identify who restores the affected surface after electrical and inspection work.

  • Request a separate restoration line or a clearly stated exclusion.
  • Confirm whether the allowance covers only patching or also finish matching and paint.

What records should I receive after panel work is complete?

Keep the permit and final inspection result, equipment details, the written scope and change orders, and any utility authorization or reconnection record that applies. Inspection approval, utility restoration, and permission for grid interconnection are separate closeout items.

  • Ask who sends the final inspection result and utility paperwork.
  • Save equipment labels, circuit schedules, operating instructions, and warranty documents.

Do solar panels or a home battery always require a new electrical panel?

Solar panels or a battery do not automatically require a new electrical panel. The existing equipment, selected system, and utility requirements determine whether panel or service changes are part of the design.

  • Have the electrician and system designer identify the connection method and supported loads.
  • Ask why any panel or service change is needed before approving it.

Does a battery need utility approval if I only want backup power?

Utility approval can still apply to a battery intended for backup; the system’s operating mode, including grid-parallel operation or export, affects the requirements. Confirm the design and application for your address before treating the connection as approved.

  • Ask the designer to document each operating mode and backup-load limit.
  • Keep utility approval separate from the electrical permit and inspection.

Can I connect a portable generator to my existing panel?

A portable generator needs compatible listed transfer equipment and an electrician-designed connection to the panel. The contractor should confirm intended loads, permit requirements, utility rules for any parallel operation, and operating instructions; an online kit description does not prove compatibility.

  • Name the loads you want available during an outage.
  • Do not improvise a panel connection or rely on an online kit description.
