Is a 200 amp upgrade the right scope for my home?

A 200 amp upgrade is appropriate only when the planned loads and electrician’s assessment support that capacity. An older home or crowded panel alone does not establish the need for 200 amps.

  • EV charging, heat pumps, water heating and a remodel can factor into the review.
  • The estimate should explain which loads support the recommendation.

What work can extend beyond the breaker panel?

A service upgrade may include the meter socket, disconnect, service conductors and utility facilities in addition to the breaker panel. Overhead and underground connections bring different access and site-work questions.

  • The estimate should list utility charges, trenching, wall repairs and permits as included items or exclusions.
  • Utility equipment requirements remain separate from the electrical inspection authority’s review.

What should I share to get an estimate?

A useful estimate starts with the utility name from your bill, your address if available, planned equipment and any existing scope or inspection note. Photos of closed equipment can help; leave covers in place.

  • The contractor should explain the load basis, outage plan and completion records so you can compare the proposed work as well as the amperage and total.

What should the 200 amp handover confirm?

Keep the written scope and equipment information with the permit and final inspection record. Ask the contractor to identify the actual installed service arrangement, explain the circuit labels and list any unfinished restoration.

  • If EV charging or heating work is a later phase, document what was included in the service assessment and what still needs its own installation and permit.
  • Have the electrician check later equipment against the installed service arrangement before connecting it.
